Our research employs the theory of mechanics to elucidate the physics of interfacial rearrangements in cells that affect numerous biological processes. For example, how do macromolecules get transported into and out of the cells? How do proteins and lipid bilayers interact to create fascinating structures such as toroidal nuclear pores? How is the propagation of signals in neurons coupled to their physical state and how do these signals transmit from one neuron to the other? How do lipid membranes contribute to energy generation and storage in plants and animals? Such questions are vital not only to gain insight into the physiology of cells but also to advance the science of medicine.
