The Challenge
The Texas ASCE Student Chapters and Clubs construct and race a canoe of concrete in a competitive and rather fun environment sponsored by a national sponsor as well as by local sponsors. The objectives of the competition are as follows:
1) To challenge civil engineering students to apply engineering principles in designing and racing a concrete canoe.
2) To build awareness of ASCE's and Master Builder's commitment to civil engineering education.
3) To increase awareness of concrete technology application and innovation.
4) To reinforce the ASCE Student Chapter/Club Program.
5) To aid the professional development of young civil engineers.
6) To build camaraderie among ASCE Student Chapters/Clubs, educators, and practitioners.
Each year the competition is held in a new location hosted by an ASCE Student Chapter. After competing in the Regional Conference we travel to the National Conference and have had several respectable showings. The National
Competition in the past has been held at various universities and locations including: University of Houston, University of Texas, South Padre Island, Texas A&M University, and Texas Tech University.
Desing
The design of the canoe is the fundamental aspect of the competition. No canoe, no race. Each year a packet containing the National Qualifying Rules is sent out to each school.
Academic Aspects
There are four categories beyond racing which are scored:
1) Design Paper
2) Oral Presentation
3) Final Product
4) Racing
The Design Paper is the formulation of all the work and research completed and compiled into a technical ten page paper. Ingenuity, uniqueness of design, and research are encouraged resulting in this section's weight of 25% of the
overall score.
Multiple team members participate in the five minute Oral Presentation. Audio visual equipment such as slideprojectors, overheads, computer generated graphics, or multi-media presentations are allowed. The judges then question the
members on any subject of the concrete canoe they desire.
The Final Product is the quality of workmanship, finish, aesthetics, and name selection of the canoe. The final product must be consistent with the design paper, oral presentation, and cross-section.
