My work focuses on the development of lightweight, active, structural polymer nanocomposites with "designed-in" multifunctionality. Passively, structural integrity and reinforce
ment, via composite material enhancement, is coupled to active sensing and actuation in new piezoelectric materials as we increase our understanding of and improve upon novel nan
ocomposite concepts and the intelligent control of 1) the nanoparticle distribution within the larger matrix, 2) the composition and interfacial chemistry and 3) the structure-p
roperty-processing effects of all aspects of the material on the final product.
