Initiates - Application Process


  1. Ensure that you have fufilled the undergraduate course requirements
  2. Fill out the application form by Monday, October 9th
  3. Email your unofficial transcript and resume to tbp@egr.uh.edu by Monday, October 9th

    • For undergraduate students:
      • Highlight the courses you have taken from the Undergraduate Course Requirements on your transcript.
      • Name your Transcript File: “LastName.FirstName.Transcript.pdf”
      • Name your Resume File: “LastName.FirstName.Resume.pdf”
      • Title the email subject: FirstName LastName Application
    • For graduate students:
      • Provide a list of all degrees received and in progress (whether engineering or not) by institution, degree, major, and graduation date. Due by Monday, October 9th
      • Provide signed letter on UH letter head with the statement "I recommend for membership in Tau Beta Pi and certify that (insert your name) has completed at least half of the required coursework, including research, for the degree (insert degree in progress here).
      • Name your Transcript File: “LastName.FirstName.Transcript.pdf”
      • Name your Resume File: “LastName.FirstName.Resume.pdf”
      • Name your Recommendation File: "LastName.FirstName.Recommendation.pdf"
      • Title the email subject: FirstName LastName Application
  4. Send a Recommendation Form to TWO of your professors/faculty members - Undergraduates Only

    • Professors must complete this form by Friday, October 27th
    • Forward the link below to your professors. One of the two professors must be a faculty member from one of the engineering, math, chemistry, or physics department. You are responsible to ensure your chosen professors complete the form in a timely manner.
  5. Obtain signatures for your Signature Block by Friday, October 27th

    • TBP will provide you a Signature Block. You will obtain signatures from 6 underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores), 6 current members, 3 professors, and 3 officers. When obtaining signatures from underclassmen, you are to explain the TBP's mission. In addition, you must correctly answer a question about TBP in order to receive a signature from an officer. Questions are derived from the Who Are We?" section.
    • Please follow the signature block guidelines shown HERE.
  6. Attend an Engineering Futures (EF) session and two volunteering events by Friday, November 17th

    • Initiates are required to participate in at least one Engineering Future Session and two Volunteering Events. Sessions and events have to be completed before the Bent Polish.
    • Our chapter will be hosting some volunteer events that we invite you to participate in to get credit for your required volunteer hours. See the events for more details.
    • Please document your attendance with the provided form.
  7. Pay your Membership Fee by Friday, October 27th

    • The lifetime membership fee is $125 which includes the national dues, a subscription to The Bent magazine, a TBP pendant with your name engraved, personalized TBP certificate, initiation banquet, socials, and a TBP TX-Epsilon t-shirt. Tau Beta Pi accepts cash or checks. Please address checks to "Tau Beta Pi." Payment may be submitted through Paypal. However, there is a processing fee assessed by Paypal of $4.00

  8. Polish the UH Bent on Friday, November 17th

    • You are required to polish the bent for at least one hour. We suggest that you dress appropriately as your clothing may become soiled. In the event of severe weather problems, this date will be rescheduled and you will be notified via email. If you are unable to polish on this date, please contact an officer immediately to establish an alternative time.
    • You will meet us at the Bent in front of the Engineering Building during your scheduled time slot. Please wear something comfortable that you do not mind getting ruined. You will submit your Signature Block and the Event Attendance Form to the Bent Polish.

  9. Obtain and Polish Personal Bents by intiation on Sunday, November 19th

    • TBP will provide you a personal bent at the Bent Polish Event. You are required to polish the bent on your own time prior to the banquet. The polishing of your personal bent should be completed before initiation and brought to the initiation ceremony.
  10. Attend the Initiation Ceremony on Sunday, November 19th

    • Initiation is REQUIRED in order to become a member of Tau Beta Pi. This event is mandatory and alternative arrangements cannot be made for any reason. Please wear business professional clothing! Complete the form below prior to the Initiation Ceremony.
    • Complete the name pronunciation form before initiation.
  11. Attend the Initiation Banquet on Sunday, November 19th

    • Banquet is optional. The Banquet will follow the Initiation Ceremony. However, you are strongly encouraged into go as you will receive your TBP certificate, TBP pendant with your name engraved and your T-shirt.
    • RSVP to the banquet with this form.
    • If you are planning on bringing a guest, it is $20 per guest. You can pay at the office or via paypal. Paypal charges a small service fee.
